IP protection: recycling machinery
Definition of the best strategy to protect industrial property rights concerning a system for recycling non-ferrous materials.
Need
This company, based in the Lombardy area, has been operating for over 50 years in the manufacture of machinery for recycling non-ferrous materials, in particular compacting systems. It recently set out the need to define a strategy for the protection of intellectual property concerning a new across-the-board solution applicable to the entire range of products currently manufactured.
Solution
Our activity initially focused on a reformulation of the solution from a functional perspective, using a conceptual design approach inspired by the FBS method. The description of the technical system, according to a strict technological ontology, allowed us to determine the hierarchical relationships that represent the functioning of the system and to formulate functionally equivalent alternative technologies. Aspects amenable to protection with tools other than patents (trademarks, designs/models, and know-how) were also identified.
Benefits
- Definition of a coordinated IP protection strategy envisaging various forms of legal protection.
- 20% lower costs during the patentability examination stage due to a more appropriate description of the solution.
- Lower risk of patent circumvention.
- Identification of potential developments in the technology or alternative technologies to the current solution.
